MACULA
The macula is a small, specialized part of the retina that is responsible for central vision, which is the sharp, detailed vision we use to read, drive, and recognize faces. It is located at the center of the retina and contains a high concentration of cone cells, which are responsible for color vision and visual acuity.
Several conditions can affect the macula, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema, and macular holes. These conditions can cause central vision loss and may require medical or surgical intervention. Regular eye exams, particularly for individuals over the age of 50 or those with a family history of macular degeneration, are essential for early detection and treatment of macular conditions. Treatment options may include medications, laser therapy, or surgery, depending on the specific condition and severity of the symptoms.
