RENIN
Renin is an enzyme that is produced and secreted by specialized cells in the kidneys called juxtaglomerular cells. Renin plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.
Renin acts on a protein called angiotensinogen, which is produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. Renin cleaves angiotensinogen to form angiotensin I, which is then converted to angiotensin II by another enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it causes the blood vessels to constrict, which increases blood pressure. It also stimulates the release of aldosterone, a hormone that regulates fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
Renin secretion is regulated by a complex feedback system that involves the kidneys, the nervous system, and various hormones, including angiotensin II. When blood pressure drops, renin secretion increases, leading to the formation of angiotensin II and the subsequent increase in blood pressure. Drugs that block the renin-angiotensin system are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and other cardiovascular conditions.
