proptosis
Proptosis, also known as exophthalmos, is a medical condition characterized by the bulging or protrusion of one or both eyeballs from the eye socket (orbit). This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including thyroid eye disease, trauma, tumors, or inflammation.

Thyroid eye disease is the most common cause of proptosis and is often associated with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). In this condition, the immune system attacks the muscles and tissues around the eyes, causing inflammation and swelling that push the eyeballs forward.

Proptosis can lead to a number of symptoms, such as dryness, redness, and irritation of the eyes, double vision, and decreased vision. Severe cases of proptosis can also cause exposure keratitis, a condition in which the cornea becomes dry and damaged due to the inability to close the eyelids fully.

Treatment of proptosis depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Mild cases may be managed with lubricating eye drops or ointments, while more severe cases may require surgery to correct the position of the eyeballs and restore proper eye function.
