The term 'erethism' was originally used in the context of mercury poisoning, specifically related to exposure to mercury vapors, such as in the case of occupational mercury poisoning or mercury used in certain medical treatments. Erethism caused by mercury poisoning is commonly known as 'mercurial erethism' or 'mad hatter syndrome.' In this condition, individuals may exhibit symptoms such as irritability, emotional instability, excessive shyness, timidity, and difficulty concentrating.

However, the term 'erethism' has also been used more broadly to describe similar states of excessive irritability or excitability in other contexts.
