Yanlış : They spoke the football match all night.

Doğru : They talked about the football match all night.

Doğru : While we were all talking, the lights went out.

Bir kişi konuşup diğeri dinlerse, veya konuşmanın çoğunu bir kişi yaparsa bu durum speak veya talk fiili ile anlatılır. Ancak karşılıklı konuşma talk fiili ile söylenir.

I am not accustomed to speaking in public.

I am speaking on behalf of the company.

Yanlış : He was speaking with the postman when I saw him.

Doğru : He was speaking to the postman when I saw him.

Birisi ile konuşmak speak to sb, veya talk to sb şeklinde söylenir. Ancak bazı Amerikalılar bunun yerine speak with veya talk with kullanır.

Yanlış : I don't believe what he says; he's speaking nonsense.

Doğru : I don't believe what he says; he's talking nonsense.

Söylediklerin inanmıyorum; saçma sapan konuşuyor.

Saçma sapan konuşmak veya saçmalamak talk nonsense, aklı başında laflar etmek talk sense şeklinde söylenir.
