genitive  case = tamlayan durumu

A.  İnsanlar İçin İyelik

İngilizcede  insanların iyelikleri 's veya ' ile belirtilir. İnsanlarla ilgili isimlere şu durumlarda 's eklenir:

1. tekil isim + 's

the boy's : çocuğun                

the boy's mother : çocuğun annesi

the teacher's : öğretmenin     

the teacher's coat : öğretmenin paltosu

2.  -s ile biten tekil isim + 's

actress's : aktrisin              

actress's hat : aktrisin şapkası

James's : James'in             

James's mistake : James'in hatası

3. -s ile bitmeyen çoğul + 's

children's : çocukların         

children's toys : çocukların oyuncakları

Eğer isim -s alarak çoğul yapılmışsa iyelik durumunda yalnızca bir ' konulur:

the pilots' : pilotların          

the pilots' briefcases : pilotların çantaları

the babies' : bebeklerin       

the babies' dummies : bebeklerin emzikleri

B. Nesneler İçin İyelik

Genel olarak nesnelerin (bitkilerin, soyut isimlerin) iyeliği of ile yapılır.

the front of the house : evin cephesi

the history of navigation : denizciliğin tarihi

C. Çifte Tamlayan Durumu

Hem of hem de 's ile yapılan tamlamalara çifte tamlayan durumu denir.

a friend of mine : bir arkadaşım

this friend of mine : bu arkadaşım

This is an umbrella of my mother's.

Bu, annemin bir şemsiyesi.

That friend of Hasan's is a doctor.

Hasan'ın o arkadaşı bir doktordur.
