2.  Geçmiş anlamda kullanıldığı zaman sürekli bir yetenek belirtir ve   -ebilirdi/-abilirdi,  -ebiliyordu/-abiliyordu şeklinde çevrilir.

She could cook when she was ten.

On yaşındayken yemek yapabiliyordu.

I couldn't speak German fluently before I took the course.

Kursa girmeden önce Almanca'yı akıcı olarak konuşamıyordum.

a)  could have done = -ebilirdi/-abilirdi (ama olmadı)

I could have helped him, but I didn't want to.

b) -miş olabilir

He could have fallen into the river.

Irmağa düşmüş olabilir.
