Geçmişlik ortaçları (past participles), (shaped, found, dealt ve taught fiillerinde olduğu gibi) -d veya -t ile, (broken, given, seen ve torn fiillerinde olduğu gibi) -n ile sonlanır. Geçmişlik ortaçları şuralarda kullanılır:
1. Geçmişi gösteren bazı zamanların oluşumunda, geçmişlik mastarında (perfect infinitive) veya ulacında (perfect gerund).
She has broken. (present perfect tense)
Kırdı.
She had broken. (past perfect tense)
Kırmıştı.
to have broken = kırmış olmak (perfect infinitive)
having broken = kırmış olmak (perfect gerund)
2. Edilgen çatıda.
The mirror was broken.
Ayna kırıldı.
He was sent to prison.
Hapishaneye gönderildi.
3. Edilgen anlamlı bir sıfat olarak.
He tried to sell a stolen watch.
Çalıntı bir saat satmaya çalıştı.
He was arrested for armed robbery.
Silahlı soygundan tutuklandı.
4. Cümleye ek bir anlam katmak için bir isimden sonra.
There were a lot of bottles thrown into the sea.
Denize atılmış birçok şişe vardı.
Cars parked in this area will be taken away.
Bu alanda park edilmiş arabalar alınıp götürülecektir.
5. Özne + edilgen eylem diziminin yerine geçmek üzere.
She entered the hotel. She was accompanied by her rich boss.
